Today we took a tour of Will's brain! A group of Grade 5's with the help of Mr. Barber shared a reader's theatre describing many different parts of the brain and the functions of these parts. Characters such as; Dopamine, Seratonin, and the Neuron Brothers described what happened in Will's brain when he tries to remember songs, when he gets a 'boo boo', when he needs to make a decision and when he rides a roller coaster. The audience enjoyed the skit and had many detailed questions which the Grade 5's answered brilliantly!

For Brain Awareness week today our Director of Learning, Heather Clayton, led an assembly asking the children to think about the brain in many different ways. Some questions she asked in her game were:
How is the brain like.... a cabbage? a raisin? a pillowcase? a grapefruit? After our game, we watched a video about how the neurons in our brain make pathways and make connections! This week April 8-12, 2013 is our Brain Awareness Week. We will be having assemblies and events throughout the week to learn more about the brain. In addition to our school wide events, the Grade 4 students will be completing a brain inquiry project about a question of interest to them. We look forward to an exciting week of learning. Be sure to ask your children about how the brain stretches and grows. The video below is from our Mad Science assembly which focussed on magic and how the brain makes connections. How does your brain grow and stretch?
Just before spring break and then again today we had 4 visitors from the Camosun College Nursing Program. The purpose of their visit was to introduce us to the Sip Smart program. This program teaches children why it is important to drink fewer sugary drinks and more water. The students had fun identifying which drinks contained the most sugar and how much sugar! The students recognized the value and importance of drinking water and made advertising posters to share what they learned. What could you drink more or less of?The basketball unit is coming to an end. Although no other schools have a grade four team, the girls did manage to particpate in an intersquad. They defended hard and scored lots of baskets. Well done girls!
Throughout the second term, we have enjoyed many opportunities to learn about First Nations in British Columbia and Canada. We felt fortunate to be able to learn from Leslie McGarry, who delivers a wonderful program through the Victoria Native Friendship Association. She visited us at school, where we made potlatch pouches and toured us around the Royal BC Museum where she shared stories of her ancestors and family. It was a great experience to see our work published into a book which we will keep forever. With the 4H class, we celebrated our book launch by toasting each other and our 'editor' Ms. Rachel Boult. We also enjoyed 'mingling' with one another and talking about what it feels like to be a published author. Our final book respresents so many steps in our learning about animals, their habitats and adaptations and the process of publishing. We have finished half of our FSA assessments and it's Valentine's Day. This seems like a good time to share thoughts and good times with one another. Here is a great number operation game you can play anywhere at anytime. We played today in class and stretched our thinking independently and collaborating with friends. First of all you select 5 random numbers between 1-10. Then you choose a target number between 11-20. The object of the game is to create equations that equal the target number. You may use the operations; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We encouraged the use of brackets to organize our calculations. You may only use the random numbers once. We created equations using 3, 4 and even 5 of the random numbers. Have fun and have a great long weekend!
Free style, breast stroke, back stroke and butterfly stroke! On Tuesday, some students in Grade 4 participated in the VISSA swim meet at Commonwealth Pool. The swam with courage and enthusiasm and represented SMUS admirably. For many of them this was their 2nd swim meet ever and some tried strokes for the very first time. Congratulations to all the swimmers. |
