Today in class we made gifts like foam ornaments and hot cocoa mixes. We had both grade four classes making gifts together. It was nice to get in the holiday spirit.

November is an exciting time in Grade 4 for many reasons. An important event that happens every year is the first Strings Concert for these students. After much preparation, the children in both Grade 4 classes join together to present their learning thus far. It is amazing to see all that they have accomplished individually and as a larger ensemble. How did you feel after your first Strings Concert?
What will you remember most about this experience? On what turned out to be a beautiful day late in November, both Grade 4 classes headed to Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary to discover more about Wetland habitats. The students and parent volunteers engaged in three different activities. The first was a wetland walk where they learned about the plants and animals that live in the Swan Lake wetland. The second activity involved dip netting, observing and identifying living organisms from the lake. Finally the students explored the nature house and learned about local species and their adaptations. Meeting the turtle and the snake was a big highlight for the students.
Grade 4J and 5N students recently completed a personal narrative writing unit. To celebrate all that they learned and created, the classes joined together to 'launch' their stories into the world, share with fellow students and celebrate the process. Both classes were involved in an ongoing writing workshop; first they identified small moments in their own lives that were important to share. Students were encouraged to zoom in on their 'seed stories' and 'show' the step by step events of the story. The children worked hard to incorporate skills and techniques learned in their mini lessons into their own writing. Students revised and edited their work many times to complete a polished personal narrative to share. 4J and 5N thank Ms. Lamarche, Ms. Ritchie, Mrs. Cook and Ms. Boult for lending their writing expertise on the celebration day and the parents for providing snacks. As I am now beginning to post about events and activities throughout the year. I thought I would post some photos which I shared at Parent Night back in September.
