Grade 4 Update
Dear Parents,
Happy post Halloween! We hope you and your family enjoyed the festivities of Halloween yesterday. We have to say that it has been quite a quiet day so far. Here is a quick update on what we are currently focusing on in class these days:
Language Arts
*We are still enjoying Out of My Mind (the Global Read Aloud). We are working on deepening our thoughts, connections and written ideas. As a class we have had many wonderful discussions about Melody. Many days end with reading this book out loud.
*We are continuing to generate seed story ideas in the writing workshop and will be taking a personal narrative story through the writing process in the weeks ahead.
*Regular quiet reading and recording of reading first thing in the morning
*We have been learning about topic sentences, concluding sentences and writing proper paragraphs for our research projects.
*We have been focusing on reading non-fiction text for the purpose of gaining information.
Mathematics
*We have been focusing on addition and subtraction to 4 digits.
*We have had many opportunities to solidify these skills with the IXL Mathematics program that all Grade 4 students have an account in.
*There have been many opportunities to apply our subtraction and addition expertise in the area of problem solving questions.
*Students are regularly involved in mystery number games and activities to help develop a solid number sense.
Science/Social Studies
*We are completing our paragraph writing for our research as we write this update.
*Most students will be working on using Microsoft Word 2013 for the purpose of word processing their text for this research project.
*We will be continuing our mapping unit with students mapping the distribution of the habitat of their specific animals.
Life Skills
*Our focus is peacefulness as a virtue for this month. Stories and activities will be shared to explore this virtue in a personalized way for students.
Important Dates to Remember in November:
*November 7th – ½ day of school. Students are dismissed at 11:30.
*November 12- Return after midterm break.
November 28th – Field trip to Swan Lake for the Habitat Program. Information about this field trip will follow next week.
Enjoy your weekend,
Heather and Jane
